A SoundPath Project – Hearing Assessment and
Fitting of Hearing Aids For Autistic
Individuals / Carers with Hearing Impairment

January 2025 – December 2026
Statistics from the National Library of Medicine indicates that children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have a much higher rate of co-occuring deafness compared to the general population. It is estimated that 50% of all children with ASD have a peripheral hearing issue, much higher than the 15% of their neurotypical peers. The overlapping behaviours associated with ASD and hearing impairment (HI) often cause HI to be undiagnosed or overlooked, delaying interventions that could significantly assist an ASD child's speech and developmental progress.

With this pressing need in mind, Koo Foundation has partnered with Phonak Hearing Centre Hong Kong to establish A Sound Path Project, providing specialised hearing support for individuals with ASD and HI.
Programme Details
Phonak Hearing Centre Hong Kong has been established for over 36 years with a team of hearing care professionals including qualified audiologist and hearing instrument specialists servicing the hearing impaired population in HK. Their services include audiological assessment, hearing aid fitting and professional consultation.
This two-year pioneer initiative, generously supported by the Koo Foundation, aims to enhance the communication and quality of life for 50 individuals with ASD from underprivileged backgrounds. The project will conduct comprehensive hearing assessments and provide personalised hearing aids, addressing a vital yet often overlooked need. This support is key to unlocking their voices, providing the critical foundation they need to build essential social skills and connect with the world around them.

We believe that by providing this comprehensive support and shining a light on this important issue, A Sound Path Project will not only improve individual lives but illuminate the vast potential within the ASD community by helping us see and hear every one of its members.
